Social Work

Who is served - low-income, refugees - Since 1996 United States has given refuge to the Iraqi prisoners of war who were in Saudi Arabia as a result of the Gulf War. A number of them have settled in the Salt Lake area in Utah with their numbers increasing over the years with new arrivals. After their initial settlement process ranging more or less a year that is contracted by the government to non-government resettlement agencies they are declared independent and have to survive on their own whether they are fully capable of doing so or not. Based on our experience with the Iraqi refugees in the Salt Lake area, one can say that about a third of this population manages to stand on its own feet economically, another third is able to survive but a third needs social service intervention which may involve language interpretation, help with navigating the system such as filling out forms and making payment, and/or mobility/transportation issues. Of the last 33% who need intervention between 5 to 10% have a critical need for it to keep them from becoming destitute and/or homeless or sick in a life threatening manner. Once a refugee who continues to need help but is declared independent seeks such help from the few typically no more than five individuals community leaders who we contract with and refer to as Social Service Facilitators. These individuals are business savvy and language competent and possess their own transportation. This demand for help is a burden on these refugee community leaders as it takes time and energy away their efforts to make a successful living for themselves as they are not compensated for providing such help. Sallt Lake American Muslim remedies this situation by contracting with these community leaders and paying them for providing the critical facilitation in the delivery of social services to the refugees needing such help.

What service is provided - Refugees need help in completing everyday tasks such as with a doctors appointment or they may need intervention in emergency circumstances such as a pregnant woman about to deliver needing to be transported to the hospital for safe delivery of her baby. These are actual cases of assistance provided by community leaders who serve as Salt Lake American Muslim Social Service Facilitators to their community members. Service is provided to clients in fourteen areas of activities covering most aspects of daily life both ordinary and extraordinary. It should be noted that although it is a burden on the community leaders to provide help however they are culturally and linguistically best equipped to provide such help to their community members needing help.

How is service provided - Salt Lake American Muslim obtains grant money to compensate the refugee leader/Social Service Facilitator who provides social service intervention on an on-call basis for short duration assignments seven days a week 24 hours a day. Unless otherwise specified, 80% of this grant money pays for direct services to the refugees clients and 20% is used for administration support and infrastructure. Salt Lake American Muslim was inspired by the plight of the Iraqi refugees living in the Salt Lake area. After successful experience helping them, service population was expanded to help the Afghan, Somali, and Ahiska Turks living in this region and recently to the Myanmar refugee population as well. Any low-income individual who asks for help is provided help in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner at the discretion of the Social Service Facilitator.

Multicultural Festival

In an effort to curb current tension experienced between Muslims and non-Muslims globally, which is similar to that faced historically by Native Americans, Irish Americans, Jewish Americans, African Americans, Japanese Americans, Hispanic Americans and now Muslim Americans - Salt Lake American Muslim undertakes multicultural activities such as our festival A Celebration of Cultural Diversity to generate mutual understanding and goodwill not only between Muslims and non-Muslims but among all ethnic communities that reside in Salt Lake County through sharing of the very best ethnic cultural artistic expression as part of the American acculturation process.

Social Services

2010-11 Grants and Projects

For 2010-11 we have received combined $10,000 grant monies from American Express $5,000 and from the Eccles Foundation $5,000 for the continuation of our Salaam Refugee Services of Survival social services project.

We are recipients of a $7,500 social services block grant for 2010-11 from Salt Lake County to continue our Salaam Refugee Services of Survival project.

Utah Labor Commission has awarded us a grant of $7000 for 2010-11 to conduct a project to educate the Alrasool Islamic Center community on Workplace Safety.

2009-10 Grants and Projects

$12,000 grant from the Utah Department of Workforce Services, Office of Refugee Services for a Case Management project exclusively for the Myanmar Indigenous Refugee Community of Utah. Four community-based Social Service Facilitators served 75 Clients performing 176 Assignments. As part of the grant project six community workshops were organized to acculturate community members on how to navigate the system and 28 home visits were conducted to ensure community members were living in safe living conditions. A Client Satisfaction Survey was conducted. Of the 22 Respondents 14 rated the Project Overall as Very Good, 7 rated it as Good, and one gave no answer.

During 2009-10 in a combined $10,000 project funded by American Express for $5,000 and by Eccles Foundation for $5,000 we served a total of 33 individuals in 28 families as follows: Afghan 6; Ahiska Turks (from Russia) 4; Burundian 8; Iraqi 9; Nepali 4; Somali 2. Service was performed by eight Social Service Facilitators providing 396.5 Hours of service.

Utah Labor Commission Workplace Safety grant of $3400 for 2009-10. A Workplace Safety Survey was conducted of the Alrasool Islamic Center community.

We received a $2,000 grant from Wells Fargo Bank for our infrastructure expenses.

Recognized by the US Census Bureau for community census assistance for the 2010 Census.

2008-09 Grants and Projects

In 2008-09 through a $10,000 Salt Lake County Social Services Block Grant we served 59 clients performing 175 assignments using eight Social Service Facilitators serving their respective communities performing 482.25 hours of service.

We received a $1,000 grant from Wells Fargo Bank for our infrastructure expenses.

2007-08 Grants and Projects

During 2006-08 we conducted a $5,000 Utah Refugee Interpreter project for the Utah Workforce Services. 27 clients were served by 9 interpreters performing 98 assignments and 274.75 hours of service.

2006-07 Grants and Projects

Utah Dept of Health Tobacco Prevention mini-grant $1,500 for a Tobacco Prevention Retailer Survey.

Cultural Festival

Salaam organized its first multicultural festival in 2003 and conducted its eighth festival in 2010. This festival called A Celebration of Cultural Diversity is funded by grant support from Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks, Salt Lake City Arts Council, and Utah Arts Council in the range of $500 to $4000. This festival has been recognized by Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County Mayor and by the Governor of the State of Utah with proclamations for promoting inclusion of diversity.

A Media Forum was organized at the Salt Lake City Library in 2005 with leading Salt Lake print media representatives participating.

Film Festivals have been organized in conjunction with the cultural festival in 2006-09.

How We Celebrate

A Celebration of Cultural Diversity Festival

Salaam organized the first Salt Lake American Muslim Cultural Festival in 2003 its headliner event to promote multiethnic multicultural goodwill. It has continued to organize this multi-ethnic multi-cultural event for the last eight years which was re-titled in 2008 as A Celebration of Cultural Diversity. This is a free family-oriented event featuring the very best authentic ethnic performing arts with multiethnic food and merchandise vendors participating.

The festival is staged through grant support from Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks, Salt Lake City Arts Council, Utah Arts Council.

A film festival has been part of the festival also art exhibits, childrens activities, and

poetry on humanitarian themes delivered in Rapp style.

This festival has been recognized by Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County Mayor and

by the Governor of the State of Utah with proclamations for promoting inclusion of

diversity. It has been staged at a variety of venues, among them, the Gallivan Center,

the Library Square, Washington Square and at the Salt Lake Art Center.

Help us run our office You should have basic computer skills MS Word and use of internet. We need a reliable and trustworthy over 18 years old person who can make at least a six month commitment for at least 8 hours a week.

Help us with grant writing We need help with grant writing and grant project management. You need to possess a lasting interest in developing structured and technical English writing and possibly social service project management. Please note you do not have to possess these skills just have an abiding interest in acquiring these skills as we will teach them to the right person. If you are good at it or become good at it and have a long-term commitment then there is possibility for compensation as well.

Help us with our festival We need help with our nonprofit free family-oriented multicultural annual festival A Celebration of Cultural Diversity staged in Fall. We need help with setup, staging, and take down for this event. No one is asked to do anything risky or beyond their capability and it is a lot of fun.
